Reclamation of the Korkinsky open-pit coal mine
RCC is helping to eliminate the environmental damage accumulated in the XXth century.
The Korkinsky open-pit coal mine is one of the most acute environmental problems in the Chelyabinsk region. Due to endogenous fires in the mine, the open-pit coal mine has been one of the largest sources of air pollution in the region for many years. In addition, landslides on the sides of the open-pit coal mine threatened to destroy residential buildings and social facilities in nearby settlements.
During the public environmental review in 2016, RCC was advised to consider the possibility of liquidating the abandoned coal workings at the Korkinsky open-pit coal mine in the Chelyabinsk region.
To eliminate sources of air pollution and strengthen the coal open-pit walls, a project to liquidate the open-pit coal mine was developed in collaboration with leading domestic design and survey organisations.
In 2018, the project underwent public discussion and received a positive conclusion from the state environmental review.

Stages of reclamation
The Korkinsky open-pit coal mine began operating in the 1930s. Coal mining ceased in the 2000s. The site was left unattended and became one of the main sources of air pollution in the region.
Works to eliminate the mine have already neutralised sources of air pollution and strengthened the coal open-pit walls.
The Korkinsky open-pit coal mine reclamation project has been recognised by the Chelyabinsk Region’s Environmental Standard.
