RCC has signed a 6.5-year contract with Metso for maintenance services at the Mikheevsky deposit (the Chelyabinsk Region). The contract involves the provision of the entire complex of services from technological process management to the support of ore breaking and grinding equipment operation, including the supply of grinding bodies. The complex of services to be rendered by Metso will now also include abrasive material supply.
The new contract is the result of the expansion of a contract signed in 2011. Today, it is the largest comprehensive maintenance contract ever concluded by Metso – a leading company in technology and service supply to customers in process industries. The cost of the supplementary contract is over 140 million euros.
The new comprehensive maintenance contract involves the supply of grinding bodies along with the operation and maintenance of grinding sections, which will make it possible to maximize the output of the copper mine at the Mikheevsky Ore Mining and Processing Plant.
Services will be rendered by about 85 operation and maintenance specialists who will be working both at the Mikheevsky Ore Mining and Processing Plant and at Metso's service centers in Russia.
Alongside with Russian Copper Company, Metso is currently buying housing for its specialists in nearby localities. To that end, the companies have bought 45 flats as of today.
“This definitely has a positive impact on the economic situation in general, even at the consumer level. New employees are residents, albeit temporary, who are regularly paid and are ready to spend their money at local stores and service enterprises. This will promote positive trends in local business development. It is very important that educated people with a certain cultural level are coming – this is also good for the local community,” said Valery Ulanovsky, CEO of the Mikheevsky Ore Mining and Processing Plant, in commenting on the situation.
According to the signed contract, Metso will supply grinding bodies for initial loading of the equipment, as well as spare and wearable parts to support a continuous production process. As under other comprehensive technical support contracts, Metso's work will fully comply with the customer's production objectives and, therefore, will be paid for per ton of processed ore.
“We have been collaborating with Metso both at the Mikheevsky and Tominsky Ore Mining and Processing Plants, and our cooperation has already proved to be highly efficient. Together with Metso, we have chosen the appropriate equipment; the company has the capacities to help us in optimizing breaking and grinding sections, while Metso's competent specialists are able to support the project professionally. The new contract is a logical continuation of the efficient collaboration between the two companies,” announced President of Russian Copper Company Vsevolod Levin.
In addition to supplying grinding bodies, Metso is also undertaking to provide a whole range of services at the grinding section of the Mikheevsky Ore Mining and Processing Plant, including servicing breakers and grinders, supplying linings for breakers and grinders, and maintenance. Supported by specialists of the Maintenance and Innovation Unit, these services will improve output and reduce RCC's total costs.
“Metso's specialists successfully apply the experience of similar operations worldwide, which also guarantees a high level of services at the Mikheevsky Ore Mining and Processing Plant,” said João Ney Colagrossi, President of Service Business Line, Metso Mining and Construction.

Erection work has already started, while equipment commissioning is scheduled for the second half of 2013. As of today, over 60% of the project investment, i.e. 26 billion rubles have been spent. After commissioning the equipment, Metso will support the operation of RCC's grinding section and provide maintenance services over the next 6.5 years.
